Nominations Open for Calgary Poet Laureate Program

Nominations are now open for Calgary’s first Poet Laureate program. Calgary’s Poet Laureate will compose and present poetry for official City of Calgary occasions, raise awareness of local issues through commissioned works and act as an ambassador for the arts in Calgary.

Calgary City Council approved a motion establishing a Poet Laureate for Calgary in July, 2011. Calgary Arts Development will administer the program in conjunction with a volunteer selection committee representing artistic peers and literary community members. The selection committee is charged to review all nominations packages and make their selection based on specific criteria.

Kerry Longpré, Chair of the Selection Committee, is looking forward to the breadth of nominations to come in the next few months. “Poet Laureates nourish the quality of life of a city, enhancing economic and social impacts. They promote and encourage cultural identity and bring poetry to citizens in a way that can inspire them.” She continues, “I can’t wait to dive into this selection for our city.”

A nominee must be a professionally published or presented literary or spoken word artist, be a current resident of Calgary, demonstrate an established career through their body of work, or have made significant contributions to their community, regardless of length of career. Self-nominations will be accepted. Nominees must agree to participate in a Poet Laureate showcase event as part of the final selection process.

The City of Calgary Poet Laureate will receive an annual honorarium of $10,000 over a two-year term. The Poet Laureate program is funded by the Poet Laureate Ambassadors:The Calgary Foundation, Calgary Chamber of Commerce, First Calgary Financial, FirstEnergy Capital Corp., TransCanada Corporation and an anonymous supporter.
The deadline for nominations is 4:30PM on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
