International Avenue Arts & Culture Centre: Call for Dancers

The Jaimie Hill & Tammy-Lynn Powers Memorial Foundation in partnership with International Avenue Arts & Culture Centre is looking for 100 dancers ages 9 and older (adults welcomed) to participate in The Celebration of Life Event on Saturday July 28th, 12 noon to 2:00pm at the Future Home of IAACC Performing Arts Facility located on the land site of 2601 –17 Avenue SE.

Background on Event Purpose:
The Artisique Performing Arts Company 22 years ago was on their way to perform at the Penticton Peach Festival when the bus they were travelling in was struck by a semi-‐truck carrying steel pipes near Golden, BC. Two girls Jaimie Hill (10) and Tammy-‐Lynn Powers (16) lost their lives and 22 other dancers in the troupe were injured.

The group has not spoken publicly since the tragedy but feel it is time to hold a celebration of life and want to invite the dance community and the people of Calgary to share in this momentous event.

The celebration of life was the inspiration of La Shayna Ozubko, who was part of the troupe and endured many years of recovery herself. The celebration is the start to a new era of hope in memory of the enduring legacy of these dancers so all artists may have a professional stage to perform.

Fundraising for the state of the art environmentally sustainable building is beginning with the pledge from
the Memorial Foundation to name the theatre. The art centre will house a 1000 seat theatre, dedicated to achieving understanding and harmony among cultures and the artistic communities through inspiring, developing, nurturing and performing of the arts. The facility will also provide rehearsal and production facilities, a cross-‐cultural archival resource area, creative dance studios, and an outdoor amphitheatre. This facility is strongly needed for the dance community.
To make this event successful we need 3 hours of rehearsal time spread over two days and of course your attendance at the event. This is a great way to support The Memorial Foundation who provides Dance scholarships every two years and a new facility.

Choreography will be simple and repetitive. Details will be provided at the rehearsals on what to expect at the event on July 28th. Participation is as a volunteer.
